Debt Consolidation Loans
Did anyone ever find out what was eating Gilbert Grape? Maybe he was in debt, and in need of a debt consolidation loan. If that's the case, did anyone tell him to research debt consolidation loans on the Internet?
Debt Consolidation Loans--Not for the Undisciplined
Debt consolidation loans are popular debt reduction tools to help people pay off their credit cards quickly--however, the debt is still there. The benefit of debt consolidation loans is that they are usually paid back at a much, much lower interest rate than what you're paying on your unsecured debts--the interest rate is cut by almost half, in fact. That means you can have the debt paid off in about five years.
As great as that is, paying off your credit cards immediately can be very tempting. The biggest mistake people make when they get debt consolidation loans is that they aren't disciplined enough to stop using their credit cards. Then they rack up big credit card debt again and they have high minimums to pay as well as their debt consolidation loan payments. At some point, something's gotta give, and it's usually whatever collateral you put up for the loan. Some people use their house as collateral, too, which is dangerous because if you miss payments with your house as collateral, you could lose it and become homeless.
Debt Consolidation Loans for the Disciplined
When researching debt consolidation loans, you might find a lot of advice about not using them as a "quick fix" as described above, and that's good advice. If you get a debt consolidation loan, close your credit card accounts after you pay them off. (Other unsecured debts are student loans and medical bills, so there's not much danger that you'll do much damage there.) Then, it's a good idea to work with a credit counselor to learn how to budget, how to save, and basically just how to live within your means so that you don't find yourself in debt ever again. Of course, that's up to you. Nobody can force you to do something you're not ready to do. We can, however, give you the guidance you need to make informed decisions.
